I love my toast with a bit of a savory spread but even that can get boring sometimes. To switch it up, I use different "toast toppers" within a week to save my breakfast or lunch from monotony.
Some of my favorites are:
- cucumber
- tomatoes
- pickled anything (but especially red onions)
- sautéed mushrooms
- leftover slaw
- fried onion
- another sauce or spread
- leftover beans (either just boiled or roasted)
- extra herbs
Switching these toppings also has some nutritional benefits. In addition to providing a greater variety of nutrients, studies have also shown that eating a wide variety of plant foods can help with building your gut and, in turn, support your immune system. With even just one addition in your open-faced sandwich can be beneficial. Also, name a more delicious and easy way to switch things up in the kitchen!
